Low Value Exemption (LVE)

The Low Value Exemption (LVE) is a provision under PSD2 that allows electronic payments of a specific amount threshold (e.g., for transactions up to €30) to bypass 3D Secure flow for European Economic Area (EEA) countries and United Kingdom. By default for these countries we force transactions into 3D Secure flow.

API Implementation & 3D Secure Flow

How you configure the param_3d parameter determines how the exemption is processed:

Skipping 3DS (Passing param_3d=non3d): When this parameter is passed and the amount is within the threshold, the 3D Secure flow is skipped entirely. The exemption is requested directly during the authorization step. This method works for all card schemes.

Important Notes:

  1. Regular 3DS (Omitting param_3d=non3d): In this case our 3DS will be triggered and you will receive url_3ds in our response. The exemption is requested in the 3DS authentication request, which only works for Mastercard. Depending on the issuer's decision, the 3DS flow can either be frictionless or result in a challenge. For Visa, the issuer makes its own decision during the 3DS flow.
  2. For international cards (outside EEA/UK): Passing non3d skips 3DS for any amount. If the amount falls at or below your LVE threshold, we will still flag the transaction as "low value" in the authorization request. However, because issuers outside the EEA/UK are not bound by PSD2 regulations, accepting the transaction without 3DS is entirely at their discretion.

This threshold is configured per merchant account in EUR. For transactions processed in other currencies, the amount is automatically converted to EUR at the current exchange rate to determine eligibility.
